For over 10,000 years, the coastal area in which the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center now sits has been inhabited and collectively used by Indigenous Algonquin-speaking peoples. Long Island’s shoreline—where land and water meet—continues to be a site of great cultural, ecological, and economic significance for the Montaukett, Shinnecock, and Unkechaug people.

We acknowledge the past and present meanings of these coastal lands and waters, as well as the complex history that led to its present configuration.
