Springtime on the South Shore Bays

Fred has been a member of The Fisherman Magazine staff since 1976, serving as associate editor, managing editor, associate publisher, publisher, and senior editor. He currently holds the post of editorial director. Along with his responsibilities at the magazine, he managed lengthy stints as a light tackle charter boat captain on Great South Bay and was one of the first in the modern era to guide anglers in the surf on Long Island.

Long Island’s South Shore bays come alive with some of the region’s most popular inshore gamefish during May and June. This is prime time for light tackle anglers to score with striped bass, bluefish, fluke, and weakfish from boat and shore in the protected confines of the bays and channels that make up the South Shore estuary system. Fred Golofaro grew up on these waters and has spent a lifetime discovering the where and how required to score consistently with these popular gamefish. Much of his 45-year career with The Fisherman Magazine was spent reporting on and writing about the fishing here. He will share much of what he has learned from six decades spent fishing these waters, detailing the techniques that will make you more successful whether you fish from a boat, pier, or shore.
