Rip currents are among the most dangerous hazards that Long Island beachgoers face.

However, there are many misconceptions about what rip currents are and what they do. Moreover, there are limited rip current resources in Spanish. This event, presented in both English and Spanish, will provide an overview of rip currents and how you can protect yourself if caught in one. As part of the demonstration, attendees will have the opportunity to try out a new rip current virtual reality simulation.

Our Speakers:

Dr. Kathleen Fallon - Coastal Processes and Hazards Specialist, New York Sea Grant

Dr. Kathleen Fallon has been working as the Coastal Processes and Hazards Specialist with New York Sea Grant since 2017. In her role, she works to provide outreach and education about various coastal issues such as flooding and erosion or other beach hazards, like rip currents. She coordinates a network of professionals on Long Island working within the fields of surf hazards in order to collect data and increase awareness. She obtained her degrees in Marine and Geosciences from Stony Brook University and Florida International University.

Dr. Jase Bernhardt - Assistant Professor, Hofstra University

Dr. Jase Bernhardt is an assistant professor in the Department of Geology, Environment and Sustainability at Hofstra University. His research involves the use of novel technologies such as virtual reality and video games to improve severe weather risk communication. He has appeared in local and national media to discuss this work, including The Weather Channel, The Washington Post, and Newsday. He obtained a BS in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University and an MS and PhD in Geography from Penn State.
