Plants & Animals (Grades K-2)

Jones Beach is home to diverse plants and animals that have adapted to live in a harsh and dynamic ecosystem. This program will introduce students to different types of plants on Jones Beach Island and some of the animals that depend on them.

Hognose snakes, birds, red foxes, native flowers, pine trees, and dune grasses are just some of the species present here. Join us for a scavenger hunt to learn why these plants and animals are so suited to life by the beach!

Nature Innovators (Grades K-2)

Sometimes the solution to a problem can be found right before our eyes! We will explore the science of “biomimicry,” an approach to solving human problems by looking at brilliant innovations found in the non-human world.

In this program, students will meet our animal ambassadors and investigate adaptation that help each of them thrive in their respective habitats. Then, students will have the chance to solve a human problem by designing an invention based on a structure found in nature.
