To protect the wildlife, flora, and access to scenic views Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center is undertaking an exciting project to rehabilitate the trails through the Park Preservation Area in the west end of Jones Beach State Park.
The westernmost end of Jones Beach State Park features a dynamic landscape sculpted by wind and sea. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Sloop Channel, this region offers an untouched natural setting, home to a diverse array of coastal life, a protected wildlife sanctuary, and, on clear days, a striking view of the New York City skyline. ur trail system will offer a variety of trail options, such as a short, accessible hike through the Pollinator Garden, as well as a 21-mile multiuse path along the barrier beach. A 2.5-mile hike through the maritime dunes is also offered, which is special due to its rarity. Within brackish interdunal swales, the opportunity to observe some vegetation species, such as wild seabeach amaranth, state-threatened sea pink, and marsh straw hedge is only offered in three known locations in New York State. The Park Preservation Area is an ecologically important part of the West End that protects many notable species, such as piping plovers, hairy-necked tiger beetles, least terns, short-eared owls, and seaside goldenrod.
The array of trails, which vary from sandy terrain to paved paths will be available for all visitors of the park. Patrons can enjoy birding, hiking, and fishing along this beach front preserve.
